Millers' appeal on paddy varieties

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PATIALA, June 4: Punjab Rice Millers' association has appealed to the agriculture department to consider the specifications laid down by the Union government before introducing new varieties of paddy in the state.

This was stated here today by the president of association, Tarsem Saini. He also the state government to mobilise the farmer's suitably because during the last few years some inferior quality paddy varieties like PR111, PR103 and PR114 were introduced. However, the rice thus grown was of inferior quality and yield on lower side, he said. Dr Bharoj had told that paddy having 13 percent moisture contents an fully cleaned was got shelled at the hulklars hullars installed at the village levels. When Japanese shelling plant had been installed in the pau Ludhiana saini has further said that contrary to the above Union government have fixed specificions to procure procure paddy of 18 percent moisture content and having one percent foreign matter and as such due to higher percentage of moisture by five percent plus one percent foreign matter, three kg rice is derived lessout of the one quintal of paddy which directly incures losses to the milling industry whereas by considering other factors like harvesting by the coimbines comrpt by combines advance sowing and improper cleaning this loss enhances from three kg to five kg due to the milling of state agencies and the default in more as time 1955 rice millers 2/last the milling policy and yield percentage, during the Times to come resulting which the state government ultimately the farmers would sufferFinancial losses besides other discomforts for which agriculture department cannot cannot escape from its resposibility.

Saini has further said that central government has declined to carry out experiment for the fixation of yield of rice on the plea that on other state of the country has raised raised such demand from which it is quite quite appearent that agriculture department lacks in its functioning.
