Programme to preserve ecology

DABHOL: On the eve of the World Environment day, Konkan Agricultural University (KAU) and Dabhol Power Company (DPC) have pledged to plant more than 20,000 saplings as part of a programme to conserve the fragile bio-diversity of the region.

According to DPC officials, the plantation will comprise of mango, cashew and coconut trees targetting an area of 175 acres initially. The saplings will be planted during the coming weeks, officials added.

KAU and DPC, as part of a joint venture, have already planted more than 1.2 lakh trees in an area measuring about 225 acres. This is in addition to the 10,000-odd mango, 7000 cashew and 4000 coconut tree planted in the last two years.
