SURAT, June 6: Nearly one and a half year after Navsari district was carved out of Valsad district, the state government has published a notification creating the existence of a separate district panchayat. The revenue bifurcation was announced by the Rashtriya Janata Party in late 1997. Out of the 47 elected members from Valsad district, the notification will identify 22 members as elected to the Valsad district panchayat while the remaining 22 elected from Chikhli, Vansda, Gandevi and Navsari talukas of Navsari district will be identified as Navsari district panchayat members. The term of president of Valsad district panchayat Dr Vinodrai Gaikwad comes automatically to an end as his constituency falls under Navsari district. The process to name presidents and vice-presidents of both district panchayats, and to reconstitute various committees will begin shortly. This includes committees that were in existence in the Valsad district panchayat as well.
The process of reconstitution is expected to go on smoothly as all 47 members belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The bifurcation will not have any impact on the political scenario.
The notification includes seven members of Dharampur taluka, six of Pardi taluka, seven of Valsad taluka and five of Umargam taluka in the Valsad district panchayat, while seven from Chikhli, four from Vansda, seven from Navsari and four from Gandevi are included in the Navsari district panchayat.
The notification is silent on the demand for carving out Khairgam taluka by bifurcating Chikhli taluka. It maybe mentioned that voters from 38 villages of Khairgam block have already announced their plans to boycott the coming general elections in protest.
