Northern Railway rout ZHC

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, June 6: Northern Railway, last year's runners-up, struck the kind of form that looks like taking them to what they missed last year _ the championship title.

After coming so close, they lost out the previous year but this time around they seem more determined. The positive frame of mind was very much evident today as they played with a purpose in their 4-0 win against a resurgent Zakir Husain College in a B group super league game of the DSA-OBC Institutional League at the Ambedkar Stadium.

In another match in the super league, however, Delhi Audit struggled before prevailing over Central Secretariat, with the all-important goal coming from the boots of Pawan Bhardwaj.

The highlight of the Northern Railway-ZHC match was, undoubtedly, the fine hat-trick, the first in the super league, by inside-left Shyam Kumar. This was the icing on the cake and the victory became much more sweeter because it had come against a tough opponent, who were finding their feet in the tournament. After the reliable Mohammad Atiq put the winners in the lead eleven minutes into the game, Shyam Kumar took control of the proceeings to stamp his authority on the game. But that came only after the breather.

Minutes after resumption, Northern Railway played like the possessed as Shyam Kumar struck in thrice in quick succession to leave their opponents dumbfounded. He first struck in the 47th minute, then added to the tally in the 56th minute to round off in the 66th. After these blows, ZHC reeled under pressure to play out the time.

This was in contrast to the earlier game between Delhi Audit and Central Secretariat. The latter, who had shown good form, somehow lacked the punch and let Audit off the hook with some unimaginative shooting. Audit, though looked rusty, even after striker Bharadwaj put them ahead in 15th minute successfully clung on to the lead to romp home winners. Crown for NeetunNeetu and Asha, both of Naglamachi, stood first and second in the junior girls 800m Reebok Otto Peltzer Road races clocking 2.50 and 2.51, respcetively. In the men's 5km category, Rajpal (JLN Stadium) got the first position while Bhagwati of CISF emerged the winners in the women's 5km section.
