Pivotals recovered smartly and even posted modest gains lifting the Sensex to a high of 4075.88 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today in the wake of brisk buying support prompted by hopes that the Kargil problem would end soon. The Sensex had dipped below the 4000-psychological level at the initial stages but later rebounced sharply on reports that India had conveyed to Pakistani High Commission that its foreign minister Sartaj Aziz could visit New Delhi on June 12 for talks.The 30-share BSE sensitive index opened on a weak note at 4025.07, marginally lower from the previous close of 4035.32 and went down further to 3987.11 in the earlier part of the session. However, the Sensex rose sharply to touch a day's high of 4075.88, immediately after the report reached the market and it finally ended at 4066.82, showing a net gain of 31.50 points. The BSE-100 index gained by 16.18 points to 1760.43 from the previous close of 1744.25.
Brokers said that in a late rally pivotals attratced bull support as wellas fresh purchases by Indian Financial Institutions (IFIs) and foreign institutional investors (FIIs). Despite last day of the current account on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), operators bought sizeable quantity to enlarge their commitments in several scrips on expectations that the Kargil issue would finally be sorted out.
In the specified group, 12 cyclical scrips hit the upper circuit filter after exhausting the daily limit. Of the 148 traded A-group scrips 105 advanced while 42 declined and one remained steady.
The volume of business increased sharply by Rs 454.10 crore to Rs 1856.38 crore as compared to yesterday's turnover of Rs 1402.28 crore. Satyam Computer was the most active scrip with a turnover of Rs 224.63 crore and the scrip shot up by Rs 60 to Rs 1278. Reliance firmed up by Rs 6.40 to Rs 188.40, Ranbaxy by Rs 4.40 to Rs 606.40, Larsen by Rs 20.80 to Rs 281.15, ITC by Rs 4.90 to Rs 1079, SBI by Rs 3 to Rs 254.50, Telco by Rs 9.35 to Rs 205.35 and Tisco by Rs 2 to Rs123.50. However,Hindustan Lever dropped by Rs 24 to Rs 2246.
