CHANDIGARH, JUNE 8: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in the environmental clearance of Goindwal Sahib thermal project which is proposed to be located near the Harike wetland in Amritsar district.Sources here said the environmentalists are objecting to the location of this project as it borders the Harike wetland, the biggest bird sanctuary in the state. It is feared that the emission from this thermal project might adversely affect the fauna in this area. The wetland is spread over an area of about 70 square kms.
The state government has invited private investment for this Rs 2,000 crore project in the first phase.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of the ongoing power projects and the related issues at a high level meeting and directed the concerned authorities to ensure 10-hour uninterrupted power supply during the paddy season.
The meeting also cleared 30 micro hydel projects to generate 32 MW of powerwhich would come up with private investment. These projects would be executed by the Punjab Energy Development Agency. PEDA has identified 130 sites along the canals for setting up micro hydel projects. Twenty sites with total potential of 20 MW have already been allotted to private developers. PEDA executive director Jagjit Puri said bids had also been invited for 28 other sites. He said a total of 130 MW of power would be generated by harnessing the falls on the canals.
Two of the micro hydel projects have been commissioned on Abohar branch of Sirhind canal at Dalla and Narangwal.
