Retired Army doctor volunteers services

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, JUNE 8: Leading from the front, a 79-year-old retired Colonel has offered his services to the nation. In a moving letter to Army chief General Ved Prakash Malik, Col (retd) Dr K B Grover has said that he underwent open heart surgery three years ago, but was still raring to go.

In conversation with The Indian Express he said: ``The Kargil operations made me feel like volunteering. I am an old man and cannot do a lot of things, but whatever little I can do, I would like to for the country's security if need be, in any capacity deemed fit.''

A homoeopathic consultant, Col Grover currently resides in Dehradun. He was commissioned in 1947 and served in the Army for 26 years. During his tenure, he served under Field Marshall Cariappa and General Thimaiyya.

However, his association with the defence forces has continued with his children and grandchildern picking up from where he left.

``My son-in-law is a fighter pilot and both my sons are Colonels. My grandson is also a commissionedofficer in the Army and my grand-daughter is married to an Aviation Corps Captain. He is a helicopter pilot who has just received his posting orders for Srinagar,'' Grover said.

With his children posted in different parts of the country, Col Grover and his wife are the only ones left in the family home in Dehradun. When queried about what he would like to do, he said quite candidly: ``I know that there are several constraints because of my age and health. Whatever the General deems fit, I shall do for the country to the best of my ability.''
