New Delhi, June 8: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Manipur Government to pay an interim compensation of Rs 15,000 to a woman injured due to indiscriminate firing by two police constables in Bishnupur district of the state.NHRC sources told UNI today that the commission asked the state government to pay the compensation amount to the victim of police brutality within one month. The commission, however, appreciated the punishment awarded to the constables by the state government for their rash and negligent action and the compensation of Rs 40,000 given to the father of another woman who was killed in the police firing.
The NHRC made this recommendation on a complaint filed by Usharani, convenor of the committee on human rights, requesting appropriate action against two drunken constables attached to Kumbi police station who fired indiscriminately on Memcha Devi and Leirik Devi, who were working in a paddy field, killing the former and injuring the latter.
