Three-yr-old girl's murder solved, molester held

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, JUNE 8: The northwest district police has worked out the two-day-old gruesome murder of a three-year-old girl in Shakurpur in the Saraswati Vihar police station. The person arrested is said to have committed a similar offence for which he has undergone imprisonment. The police have registered a case of murder and attempted rape against Ramesh.

On the intervening night of June 5 and 6, the victim's family reported the girl missing. According to the family members, the girl was sleeping outside her house with her grandmother. At about 1 a.m., the grandmother went inside the house for some work. When she returned, the girl was gone.

The police found her body the next day in a dry drain about 400 yards from the house. While the police was investigating the case, they were reminded of a similar instance which occurred in 1991 in which a small girl had been killed. The accused of that murder was residing in the same colony.

The police picked Ramesh for questioning. Initially, the accused denied his involvement. But later he reportedly confessed to the attempted rape and how he had strangulated the girl. He left the body in the drain and burnt her clothes; he even joined the crowd when the body was discovered.

According to the police, interrogations revealed that Ramesh was released from jail in 1998, after undergoing the jail term. By then his wife had left him. He was unemployed and has been staying with his brothers. The residents have reportedly told the police that his conduct has not been above board and he used to try to incite small children with ice-cream.
