BMC probe against M W Desai hospital

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JUNE 9: The civic authorities have ordered an inquiry into the alleged negligence by the M W Desai Municipal Hospital at Malad, where a nine-month-old recently lost his right arm while being treated for gastroenteritis.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, G S Gill, told Express Newsline that Executive Health Officer of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Dr Alka Karande, will conduct an inquiry to ascertain whether the hospital was negligent. If so, responsibility will be fixed. The preliminary report will be ready by tomorrow, he said.

Rizwan Abdul Sattar was admitted to the hospital on May 15 with mild gasntroenteritis and administered an intravenous injection there. However, after much difficulty in locating a vein, the nurse on duty allegedly forced the needle in, which caused a gangrenous infection. The baby was finally transferred from the civic hospital to the KEM Hospital, where his arm was amputated on May 21.

Surprisingly, while the Dindoshi police have recordeds statementsof every person connected with the case, they have still to take a statement from the nurse who had inserted the intravenous needle. A senior police officer said the matter was referred to the Dindoshi police along with the hospital case papers. He claimed there was no need to record the nurse's statement since the patient was under the charge of a doctor in the paediatric ward.
