SURAT, June 9: India's place in the World Cup semi-finals is anything but certain, but Tuesday's win over traditional rival Pakistan was enough for Surtis to celebrate the victory like never before. The common refrain was ``now we won't mind even if India can't book a berth in the semis.''It was after the fall of the fourth Pakistani wicket that the Indian supporters started smelling victory. They would let off crackers with the fall of every wickets. Even before the last wicket fell the bursting of firecrackers had begun in right earnest.
The party went on for a long time and saw people turning out in large numbers. Victory processions were taken out in many areas, mostly in the walled city.
Given the frenzy the ties between the two arch-rivals whip up, the police had maintained adequate police bandobast in all sensitive localities. More so because the match came at a time when the countries are engaged in a serious military conflict.
Hundreds of people turned out in the Bhagal area carrying Indian flags. The celebrations were, however, marred in Chowk Bazaar when some over-enthusiastic fans shouted anti-Pakistan slogans while hailing India's victory.
When a sub-inspector from the Chowk Bazaar Police station tried to prevent them from doing so, scores of them surrounded him forcing him to train his service revolver at them. But such was the mood of youngsters that even the revolver failed to dampen their spirits. Two other constables who were with the PSI also had to face the fans' wrath.
The sub-inspector thought it wise to beat a retreat and return to the police station. He later called up the control room and sought deployment of more police in the area.
