Committees to combat calamities

SURAT, June 9: Taluka-level committees, having representation from district panchayat and non-government organisations, will be set up in Surat district, for management of natural calamities.

This was announced at a meeting Surat Collector Sangeeta Singh had with officials of various departments and representatives of non-government organisations here on Wednesday. The meeting was convened ahead of monsoon to review preparedness of the district administration in view of the possibility of flood and cyclones.

Singh said respective members of legislative assembly, taluka panchayat president, non-government organisations, mamlatdar and taluka development officer would be included on the committee. She said taluka mamlatdar's office, taluka panchayat office and police department would jointly carry out rescue work. Officials have been directed to inspect mechanised boats well in advance.

Departments concerned from Surat city, Olpad and Choryasi have been asked to complete on war footing the unfinished drainage works. Officials have been directed to keep vehicles ready to be used for shifting people to safer places.

Officials of Gujarat Electricity Board, Roads and Building, Telecom department, fire brigade, forest departments have been asked to be alert and keep their resources ready. The administration has also decided to create an awareness among industrial and slum areas.

A mechanised boat and a wireless set have been sanctioned for Dandi village of Olpad taluka, which was flooded by tide water recently.
