Two key heights recaptured
Mirage 2000 combat jets were pressed into strikes for the first time today as Indian troops killed 18 infiltrators including five Pakistani Army regulars in Kargil and achieved major successes by recapturing two key positions in Batalik region.

Pak planning airborne assault
The Pakistan Army special forces, the Special Service Group (SSG), appears to be preparing to launch another audacious operation through an airborne assault somewhere in the Ladakh region. And the operation could well be conducted before Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Sartaj Aziz, arrives for talks on Saturday.

Fernandes restrained
The National Security Council (NSC), which finally met for the first time yesterday, has decided that the Government must not speak in many voices, sending confusing signals to the world on the Kargil crisis. And the 30-odd participants were almost unanimous in their view that Defence Minister George Fernandes should not make any public statements on the issue.
