CHANDIGARH, June 9: Defence Minister George Fernandes, who was here today, visited the defence personnel injured in the Kargil-Drass sectors undergoing treatment at the Command Hospital at Chandimandir, near here.He was escorted by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, Lt Gen H.B. Kala, and the Hospital Commandant, Maj Gen Virender Singh. Fernandes interacted with the injured jawans. The Defence Minister spent a few minutes with each soldier and jotted down their particulars in his notebook. He also gave them gifts.
Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal, who also accompanied the Defence Minister, announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh to the Command Hospital from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
Hospital authorities said that so far, 35 soldiers injured in the Drass-Kargil sector have been brought to the Command Hospital. At present, there are 24 soldiers admitted here, of which two are in a serious condition. The rest have either been discharged or shifted to Delhi.
Fernandes also visited the Headquarters, Western Command.
