Srinath, Fazal advance to semi-final

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, JUNE 9: Top seeded Prahlad Srinath secured his berth in the semi-finals after beating sixth seed Nitin Kirtane 6-4, 6-2 in the MTNL's Satellite Masters Tennis Tournament being played here.

Second seed Artem Derepasko of Uzbekistan also reached the stage of four, defeating Indian Vijendra Laad 6-2, 6-2.

Nitin Kirtane fought very hard against Srinath in the first set, and even managed to break Srinath twice. However, the Karnataka player who was trailing at one stage, recovered to break Kirtane thrice. A number of unforced errors by Kirtane also helped Srinath's cause. In the second set, Kirtane had trouble with his serve, sending down quite a few double faults. In fact, he conceded the tie by double-faulting at match point to lose by a tame 6-2 margin.

Syed Fazaluddin, the third seed, defeated Anton Kokurin of Uzbekistan to reach the semi-finals in a three-set match which he won 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The tie was peppered by double faults with both players finding it difficult to control theirserves. Kokurin had more double-faults against his name and paid the penalty. Kokurin won the second set easily, but Fazaluddin came back in the third set and won it 6-1. In the third game of the deciding set, Kokurin served four consecutive double faults to the amusement of the sparse stands.

The last seeded player in the quarter-finals, Harsh Mankad of India also made it to the last four, ousting Vasudeva Reddy easily by a 6-2, 6-1 margin.

In the men's doubles, top seeded duo Sandeep and Nitin Kirtane got a walkover from Prahlad Srinath and Vasudeva Reddy as latter could not take the court owing to illness. In the other doubles match, third seeded pair of Minh Le and Jay Udwadia of USA lost to Vishal Uppal and Mustafa Ghouse in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
