BRISBANE, JUNE 12: Australia and The Netherlands, both world and Olympic hockey champions, went their separate ways in the defence of their Champions Trophy titles today. The Australian women routed Germany 6-2 while the Dutchmen scrambled a last-gasp equaliser against Pakistan.
Australia took their goal tally to 11 in two matches but failed to satisfy their coach Ric Charlesworth.
Charlesworth said star striker Alyson Annan, who notched two goals, was not playing anywhere near her best.
``I thought we played very poorly today and that was disappointing,'' he said.
The defending champions beat New Zealand 5-1 yesterday but Charlesworth described their performance as `sloppy' and `untidy'.
The Dutchmen, beaten 3-2 by South Korea in their opening match yesterday, salvaged a 2-2 draw with Pakistan.
Remco van Wijk opened the score for the Dutch when he converted a penalty corner in the 23rd minute and Martin Eikleboom salvaged a draw two minutes from time. Pakistan had gone 2-1 up through captainAtif Bashir, 26th minute, and Mohammed Sarwar, in the 39th.
Sarwar, who had scored in Pakistan's 1-1 draw with Spain on Thursday, struck when The Netherlands had mid-fielder Jacques Brinkman in the sin bin for dissent.
The Dutch had looked unbeaten until Eikelboom deflected a pass from veteran Stephan Veen inside the circle.
It was Pakistan's second successive draw. They face South Korea tomorrow while the Dutch next play Australia, the Olympic bronze medallists, on Monday.
New Zealand's women scored an upset when they beat South Korea 1-0 for their first win in eight years. The New Zealand women, beaten 5-1 by defending champions Australia on Thursday, bounced back to clinch victory with a 32nd minute goal from captain Anna Lawrence.
