With grit and determination New Zealand beat India to confirm their place in the semifinal. Kiwis' was a committed and purposeful effort and they played it the hard way.The match may have been inconsequential for India, but a win was crucial for the Kiwis so that they could better Zimbabwe on the run rate and book their place in the semis. India did have a flicker of hope a couple of days earlier -- if Pakistan were to lose to Zimbabwe but their hopes were shattered.
Nevertheless, India had to play at their best. In an international match there's too much at stake and nothing is given away on a platter. But the Kiwis were in no mood to hand it over to them. Besides, India owed it to their spectators too. Of all the Test playing countries, I feel the Indians enjoyed the most support in England from the large population of expatriates. Even though they were well aware that the match was of no significance to India's fortunes, the crowds came in large numbers to Trent Bridge to cheer their side. And, thatwas touching indeed!
India started off with the same strategy, of elected to bat first after winning the toss. Though Sachin Tendulkar began well, he did not last long as he was bowled by Dion Nash. In this World Cup, he did score a breathtaking century against the Kenyans, but unfortunately, beyond that he did not perform in accordance with the high standards he sets for himself. Perhaps, the demise of his father told on him emotionally, and if so, it is understandable.
Rahul Dravid, on the other hand, continued with his tremendous form to play a superb innings once again. It was a treat to watch him as long as he lasted. Saurav Ganguly too played with a lot of determination and executed some lovely drives. Both, however, got out just when they were well set for a big innings.
Ajay Jadeja, in this competition, has batted as well as anybody else. He delivered whenever the team required him to, seldom let them down, and improved remarkably well in the middle overs. Brilliant fielding apart, his battinghas been a great revelation. Little wonder then, he was promoted in the order -- and rightly so. Besides, he's a great team man and his performance has been exemplary. Yesterday, for instance, his innings was out of the top drawer as he unleashed some extraordinary shots much to the dismay of the New Zealanders.
If you ask me, Stephen Fleming committed a tactical error by persisting with his main bowlers for as many as eight overs early in the innings. As a result, when the Indians were on a rampage, he did not have the bowlers to contain them.
