MbPT rout Nobody

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JUNE 13: Mumbai Port Trust scored a facile 6-0 victory over Nobody Sports Club, Dadar, in the BHA Senior Division hockey league, sponsored by Punjab National Bank, at the Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate, today.

Nobody, a private club, came a cropper against the well-drilled and cohesive Port Trust side. But the Dadar lads did well to restrict the marauding MPT forwards to just a 2-0 lead in the first-half, otherwise the tally of goals would have been much bigger.

The highlight of MPT's triumph was a brace each by Digvijay Naik and Salauddin Siddique. Samir Jada and Amin Shaikh were the other goal-getters for the winners.

Earlier in a First Division encounter, a hat-trick by Tanvir Shaikh powered Fr Agnel Gymkhana, Vashi, to a 5-1 triumph over Catholic Gymkhana.

It was Catholic Gymkhana who caused the first flutter when their ace forward Ryan Alphonso gave them the lead through a field goal in the 11th minute. But the goal, instead of proving a shot in the arm for the Catholic Gymkhana side, exerted tremendous pressure from the Vashi outfit and they did not ease up until they restored parity through Shaukat Ali who scored through an indirect penalty-corner conversion in the 23rd minute.Thereafter Fr Agnel dictated terms in a rather sustained manner and wrested the lead in the 28th minute through Tanvir Shaikh.

On change of ends, Tanvir completed his hat-trick through goals in the 37th and 48th minutes to put victory beyond Catholic Gymkhana's reach. Ilyas Khan then scored a neat field goal in the 59th minute to round-off Fr Agnel's tally.

All Parsees prevail

All Parsees just about defeated Holy Family 2-1 in the MDFA-conducted Harwood football league at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.

Parsees were off to a good start when they took the lead in the fifth minute. Gino Arethna made the most of a Hosmang Sinor pass when he beat Holy Family goalkeeper Augustine D'Silva with a neat placement.

Holy Family retaliated with the equaliser in the 15th minute. A free-kick taken by RadhuPradhan landed to Edgar Pereira and the latter beat Parsees goalkeeper Sharom Irani all ends up.

The match-winner for Parsees came in the 22nd minute. Johnny Gomes handled the ball and referee Wilfred Pereira made no mistake when he pointed to the `spot'. Shaheen Mistry made no mistake when scoring.

The second-half was evenly contested but Holy Family had better chances of securing a goal. But goalkeeper Irani came to Parsees' rescue when he brought off a couple fine saves to frustrate Holy Family.

Earlier in the evening, Don Bosco Youth Centre A trounced Borivli Rangers 6-0 in the Air-India Trophy quarter-final tie.

Benedict S Dias (3), Chand Thakur, Francis Dias and Ashish Patel were the goal-getters.
