Gamblers arrested
In a surprise raid on two gambling dens last night, the city police arrested five people and seized Rs 17,000 in cash alongwith over 5,000 lottery tickets of the North-Eastern states whose sale is banned in Gujarat. While three persons were caught from a shop in Padmavati complex and Rs 12,000 recovered from their possession alongwith some gambling equipment, two persons were nabbed from another place in the area and Rs 5,000 in cash and the lottery tickets were seized from them.

Goods stolen
One Devanand Hiralal Mehta, a resident of Surat, has complained to the police that cash and goods including saris, goggles and batteries worth Rs 33,500 were stolen from his Ambassador car (GCX 9524) which was parked near Bhagat Singh statue opposite Nyaya Mandir on Tuesday. The Raopura police have registered a case and are investigating.

Tin sheets stolen
Corrugated tin sheets worth over Rs 2,500 are reported to have been stolen from the premises of a primary school in Darjipura area under city police station last night. According to the police, the school's main gate lock was broken and the tin sheets stolen. Investigations are on.

Hit-and-run
A police constable of the city police station, Shankar Bhima Marwari, and his friend Chandu Yadav, who were on a motorcycle, died in a road mishap at Ajwa Road Crossing on National Highway No. 8 last night. According to the police, their motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck (GJ-1-B-7581). The truck driver is absconding.
