VADODARA, JUNE 16: Internationally known architect R J Vasavada has a unique gift for the city -- a necklace around the Kothi building. According to the final plan conceived and designed by Vasavada who is the project consultant for the country's western region for the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, the 80-year-old three-storey Kothi building, constructed then at a cost of about Rs 4 lakh in an area of about 12,000 sq-ft by the city's erstwhile rulers, the Gaekwads, will soon have a necklace; seven air-conditioned rooms in the basement of the building's original gate on the Raopura market side.According to official information, the plan, already approved by the State government through district collector Anil Mukim, is to be completed during the next six months. Gates from this side -- facing M G Road, Raopura -- would be reopened after about a decade. Parking space remains unchanged.
Exactly in front of Ceremonial Plaza (with a flag-mast), a seven-room information gallery would be constructed like a necklace. The construction would be sub-surface to ensure that the building's old grace is untouched (see photo). The upcoming Vadodara model district activities, especially for information dissemination through internet and E-mails, would be linked from here.
The man behind the plan is unassuming. ``I am nothing. The creation may be for the connoisseurs and the art loving people of Vadodara. I have done nothing to the building but have tried to create a little more space within from whatever was available'', says Vasavada.
