Court update -- Delhi

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Treat Lal Kuan victims properly, LNJP told
The Delhi High Court has directed LNJP Hospital to ensure proper treatment for victims of the Lal Kuan fire and provide free medicines to all of them. The fire, which broke out in a transport company on May 31, has claimed 54 lives so far. Several victims are struggling with 60 to 100 per cent burns at the hospital. Issuing notices to the Union and Delhi governments, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the police commissioner on a petition seeking adequate compensation for the fire victims, a division bench of justices Dalveer Bhandari and Madan Lokur today also directed LNJP authorities to provide air-conditioned rooms to the patients.

The respondents have been asked to file their replies by July 5, when the case comes up for hearing next. The petition has been filed by the All India Lawyers Union (AILU).

AILU counsel Ashok Aggarwal said that the patients were not getting proper treatment at LNJP hospital and the medicines had to be bought by them from the market.

Jessica case: Cops want bail of all accused cancelled
The Delhi Police today told the high court that it was necessary to cancel the bail of the four accused in the Jessica Lal murder case to expedite the investigation. Justice Madan Lokur was told by standing counsel S.S. Gandhi that the weapon of offence was yet to be recovered and the police would face prolems in filing the chargesheet within the mandatory period of 90 days. The police had moved the high court for cancelling the bail of Vikas Yadav, Amardeep Singh Gill alias Tony, Alok Khanna and Amit Jhingan. On being asked by the court what was the basis of seeking cancellation of bail, Gandhi said there was reasonable suspicion that the four had helped prime accused Manu escape from Delhi and destroy the evidence.

Anticipatory bail for doctor
A city court has granted anticipatory bail to a doctor in connection with the murder of a domestic help in Paschim Vihar on June 8. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate J.R. Aryan said: ``No offence is made out against the person.''

According to the police, Dr V.S. Malik failed to tell them about the unnatural death of the 24-year-old domestic help, Upendra. The defence, however, said the doctor did not know the nature of the injury. ``He did his duty and tried to save a person's life,'' Malik's counsel told the court. Upendra's employer, Manmohan Mehra, allegedly tried to murder him on June 8. The domestic help was admitted to Malik's private nursing home on the same night. He died the next day. An anonymous caller informed the police about Upendra's death.
