Mamata sparks row over seat-sharing

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CALCUTTA, JUNE 16: Seat Sharing sentiments between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TC) turned sour on Wednesday with Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee threatening to field candidates in all the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal if the BJP fields its nominee in Midnapore seat.

Reacting sharply to State BJP general secretary Rahul Sinha's statement that his party would contest 14 seats, including Midnapore and Bankura, an angry Banerjee said "We do not change our stand everyday. Midnapore seat was already allotted to Trinamool Congress by the BJP central leadership, including Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee during the June 7 meeting."

Discarding the possibility of "friendly contest" between the two allies in Midnapore like the last polls, she retorted, "If there is a friendly fight in one seat there will be friendly fight in all the 42 seats. We are capable of putting up candidates in all the seats."

The agreement on seat sharing was reached for 41 seats and only Bankuraremained to be decided, she said, adding the BJP leadership had said that they would discuss it and convey their decision.

Asked if she was ready to exchange Purulia seat which was offered by the BJP, the TC chief retorted, "Why do they (BJP) want to give those seats which they cannot win?"

Earlier in the day, Sinha asked TC not to create "bad blood" on the seat adjustment issue and instead launch joint campaign for the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Sinha, who was briefing newsmen on the outcome of last night's BJP election committee meeting, said the BJP would field candidates in Midnapore and Bankura and was ready to exchange Purulia seat if Trinamool Congress agreed to it as it had exchanged Raigunj in lieu of Balurghat seat.

The party's central leadership including Vajpayee, he said, were being informed of the decision.

Citing reasons for contesting Midnapore, Sinha said that in the 1998 poll when the two allies were engaged in the friendly contest, the BJP candidate emerged second. Organisationallyalso BJP was in a better position in Midnapore, he claimed.
