Indian duo hope to improve record

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
LONDON, JUN 16: Despite dominating the doubles field for over two years, the Indians never had much success on Wimbledon's grass and were knocked out in the second round last year.

Occupying their deserved place at the top in the ATP rankings, both as a team and individual doubles players, Paes and Bhupathi should aim to fulfill their next ambition - winning the coveted Wimbledon trophy.

The Indian duo, with greater confidence following their maiden Grand Slam win at Roland Garros, should easily get into the quarterfinals at Wimbledon despite their record here not favouring them.

Every win will earn them valuable points to help consolidate their position at the top and realise their next ambition - finishing the year as the highest ranked team.

In the third round, Paes/Bhupathi could clash with 16th-seeded Americans Patrick Galbriath and Justin Gimelstob.

The round of eight will throw up a tricky battle for the Indians with seventh seeds Ellis Ferreira (South Africa) and Rick Leach (US) their likelyopponents.

The Indians met the South African-US pair at the same stage two weeks ago in Paris and beat them handsomely 7-5, 6-2.

Paes/Bhupathi are followed in the seedings by five-time Wimbledon champions from Australia Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde. The Woodies have had an indifferent season in 1999 and with age catching up on Woodforde, it could possibly be their last year together.

The second seeds are in the bottom half of the draw and face the Spanish pair of Juan Ignacio Carrasco/Jairo Velasco in the first round. The Spaniards, very good doubles players, were the first round opponents to Paes/Bhupathi in the French Open where they stretch the eventual winners to three sets.

The end of 1998 saw the formidable Dutch pair of Jaaco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis ending their partnership with senior Eltingh hanging his boots.

World number three pair and Australian open champions Jonas Bjorkman (Sweden) and Pat Rafter (Australia) are seeded as per their ranking - third - and are in the third quarterdraw led by the sixth-seeded pair of Mark Knowles (Bahamas) and Daniel Nestor (Canada).

The Swede-Aussie pair are coming to Wimbledon fresh from their win at the ATP grass court tournament in Halle, Germany over the weekend.

The Woodies seem to have a tough draw with dangerous floaters Yevgeny Kafelnikov (Russia) and Max Mirnyi (Belarus) as their possible second round opponents.
