NAGPUR, JUNE 20: Assistant Registrar of Nagpur University Yadav Natthu Kohchade was trapped here on Saturday by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while attempting to bribe a police officer probing the fake degree and marksheets scandal. Kohchade offered to pay a whopping Rs 7 lakh in cash to ensure that his name did not figure in the police investigation. The ACB action not only caused a big sensation in the busy Sitabuldi area where the `deal' was being executed at a restaurant but also sent ripples through the varsity circles. It can potentially lead to some damaging revelations concerning the scandal that has been regularly hitting the headlines.
Kohchade, whose official residence near Subhedhar hall was put under search immediately after the trap, has admitted to have made the cash through the murky dealings which form part of the scandal, Superintendent of Police (ACB) Shrikant B Sawarkar told The Indian Express.
The ACB was looking into the aspect of disproportionate cash, recovered from Kohchade,he said, adding that the Sitabuldi police was continuing with its probe into the scandal.
Not long ago, the Sitabuldi police had arrested two varsity employees --Manohar Shendre (35) and Narayan Dhule (35) -- for their alleged complicity in the scandal and seized incriminating material. The probe had since picked up momentum. On Friday last, the investigating officer, sub-inspector Anil Lokhande, summoned one Bunty Uike for questioning in connection with the scandal.
Bunty reportedly dropped a few names including that of Kohchade, during the questioning. It was after he left the police station when PSI Lokhande received a telephone call from Kohchade who insisted upon meeting him the same night near the traffic signal at Rahatey colony. Lokhande did so only to come across a meaty offer from Kohchade suggesting a sizeable bribe in exchange of a clean slate for the latter.
Not to get carried away by the offer, Lokhande pretended of taking the assistant registrar into confidence and asked him to eke out25 per cent of the money made through the scandalous dealings. Kohchade found nothing wrong with it and struck a `deal' with the police officer. He even asked Lokhande to meet him at Hotel Gangaur in Sitabuldi on Saturday afternoon.
Early on Saturday, Lokhande contacted Sawarkar at the ACB office and lodged a formal complaint against Kohchade, narrating the entire episode and a trap was laid in the vicinity of the restaurant.
Lokhande met Kohchade as per their `deal' around 3 pm even as some of the ACB sleuths had taken position inside the restaurant while some others were waiting for signal to zero in on the varsity official.
Following an exchange of pleasantaries, Kohchade handed over a polythene bag, containing the cash, to Lokhande. Both started their way out of the hotel when Lokhande signalled the sleuths and Kohchade was trapped. The PSI handed over the cash bag to the ACB sleuths. A search on the person of Kohchade lead to the recovery of another cash of Rs 17,000.
Kohchade was later takento his official residence where a search commenced. The police reportedly seized some incriminating material. An offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) has been registered against Kohchade at the Sitabuldi police station and further investigation was on, the police informed.
