Govt will have to answer questions on Kargil -- Sonia

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
GANGTOK, JUNE 20: Congress president Sonia Gandhi today wondered whether the Vajpayee Government had discharged its responsibilities as regards the Kargil conflict and asserted that it owed the nation answers to several questions.

"Kya sarkar ne apni zimmedariyan thik tarah sey nibhai hain? Deshwasion sey kuch nahi chhipana chahiye (Has the government discharged its responsibilities properly? Nothing should be hidden from the people)," Gandhi said at a public meeting at the Paljor stadium here.

However, maintaining that this was not the time to talk about ``all this'', as the country needed to project a united face, she said the Congress would exercise its democratic right ``at the right time''.

The Government would have to reply to "each and every question" on the Kargil issue to th Congress by virtue of it being the main Opposition party, she said.

"The Congress is supporting the steps initiated by Government to drive out Pakistan-backed intruders and protect the country's border," she said.Gandhi, who was on a brief visit, paid tribute to the soldiers who had sacrificed their lives in Kargil. Referring to the prevailing political uncertainty, she said for the last three years, the country's development and its impact on day-to-day living had suffered for want of political stability.

Meanwhile, the Congress today reiterated its support to the Vajpayee government in dealing with Pakistan-backed intruders in Kargil, but alleged that the BJP, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal were trying to `derive political benefit'' from the situation.

AICC secretary in charge of West Bengal, V Narayanswami said the Congress would continue to support the Vajpayee government on the Kargil issue ``because we have to take on Pakistan and drive the infiltrators beyond the Line of Control''.
