13 JAK soldier Rakesh Kumar cremated

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
DHARAMSALA, JUNE 19: Thousands of villagers gathered to bid a tearful farewell to Naik Rakesh Kumar of 13 JAK, from Lambapatt village of Palampur sub-division. Kumar died while fighting Pakistan intruders in Kargil on June 14.

The Army handed over the body to his family early this morning. The mortal remains of Naik Rakesh Kumar were consigned to flames at the Bhartari Hari cremation ground near Gopalpur today with military and state honours. His elder brother Sibia, also an ex-serviceman, lit the pyre. His wife. Bimla, who, against social customs, dressed herself in customary Gaddi attire and helped carry her husband's coffin, ultimately fainted.

Rakesh Kumar's three sisters and his father, who has also served in the Army, cried bitterly. Wreaths were laid by the Agriculture Minister and the Education Minister.

From his village to the cremation ground, adults and school children waited along both sides of the road to have a last glimpse of Rakesh Kumar. As the funeral parade advanced, people showeredflowers on the coffin draped with the tri-colour.

Among those present during the last rites were Transport Minster Kishan Kapoor, divisional commissioner, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police.

Youth also burnt the effigy of prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif. A shanti path was held at HPAU auditorium today to pray for the soul of Lt Saurabh Kalia. A large number of people attended.
