Cable operators to stabilise `stable' of channels soon

HARPREET BAJWA
CHANDIGARH, JUNE 20: The past few days have been disquieting for couch potatoes, what with popular channels appearing and dispappearing on their own. But cable operators say they will soon stabilise their "stable" of channels.

Star World, which has been eluding viewers for the past few days, will be back on the air tomorrow to the vast relief of those addicted to American, British and Australian serials.

Discovery, which has been playing hide and seek for the past fortnight, too might stage a comeback if people shell out Rs 5 extra per household. Lucky, a young man who is a regular Discovery watcher, says he has been bored ever since the channel went off the air with its informative programmes on "all kinds of things ... crime, space, history, automobiles, nature, every field one can think of." He likes National Geographic Channel too "although it's a little too much of wildlife and nature-related programes".

Say goodbye to Punjabi World. The channel wound up operations abruptly without notice, say the cable operators. But its disappearance hasn't hurt many, for it has been replaced with Lashkara which, many claim, offers more varied fare.

Chandigarh being a cosmopolitian place, the channels broadcasting in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu surely have their viewers, but these Dravidian languages are "Greek" to the majority who wish they would be replaced.Rajnish Khanna of Siti Cable says that in the near future they will introduce four new channels: Sony Action, Fashion World and two more which haven't been decided yet.

He also claimed that "very shortly" Siti Cable will switch to 450 MHZ for more clarity.
