ROOPNAGAR, JUNE 20: THE project to connect Anandpur Sahib with Naina Devi through a ropeway as part of the Khalsa tercentenary festivities will go long way in cementing inter-faith ties, said Takht Keshgarh Sahib Jathedar Prof Manjit Singh.Reacting to the recent announcement by the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh that the project would be implemented, the Jathedar said, ``For me its a dream come true.''
Manjit Singh, who had listed the ropeway project among 14 proposals for Anandpur Sahib before the festivities began, said, ``This would not only strengthen ties between the two faiths (Hindus and Sikhs), but also see bridging of gaps between the two provinces.''
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his Himachal Pradesh counterpart, Prem Kumar Dhumal have said they will meet the Prime Minister to seek funds for the project. It is estimated that Rs 30 crore shall be spent on the project, which will reduce the 18-km long road distance between the two destinations to six or seven kilometers. The two places are currently connected by a narrow highway, and the entire route is hilly.
According to Manjit Singh, the ideal location to transport the devotees from near Anandpur Sahib is Kaulan Wala Toba, which is in Himachal Pardesh. During the festivities, the Punjab government had widened and strengthened a section of the road connecting Anandpur Sahib to Kaulan Wala Toba. The rest of the journey will be more comfortable once a ropeway service becomes operational. Although a blueprint has to be made and land acquisition has yet to be planned, Manjit Singh has suggested that a cafeteria be set up in the vicinity of Kaulan Wala Toba.
He says that once the ropeway starts functioning, it will bring foreign exchange to both the states and raise the residents' standard of living. Manjit Singh suggested that a private company may be engaged on a contractual basis to undertake the project if the state government finds it difficult to manage.
Legend holds that Guru Gobind Singh had visited Naina Devi. The Guru had great reverence for Naina Devi and the place finds a mention in his Dasam Granth.
