PUNE, JUNE 20: A proposal for linking the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Transportnagar at sector 23 in Nigdi in Pimpri-Chinchwad, has in principle, been accepted by the Public Works Minister Nitin Gadkari. The proposal was forwarded by Haveli Shiv Sena MLA Gajanan Babar during the budgetary session of the State Assembly held in April. The link would prove vital in many ways, one of them being reduction of traffic on the Mumbai-Pune highway which has increased considerably over the years. The road stretch, linking the Express Highway (which begins at Kiwale village) and sector 23 in Nigdi where Transportnagar is located, will have a length of about four kilometres. It would pass through Ravet village, run along the railway line up to Bijlinagar, and reach the railway overbridge and finally to the Transportnagar. The link would be important for another major reason as transport vehicles from Pimpri-Chinchwad would be able to reach Mumbai by the Expressway much faster.
The authorities of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) are examining the technical aspects of the proposal. There have been one round of discussions between the MSRDC authorities and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) officials. While it is the MSRDC that will bear the cost of the work, the PCMC will assist in the work. Incidentally, the PCMC has already taken up work of constructing a railway overbridge near Bijlinagar. The authorities are examining if a separate overbridge would be required for providing the link between the Expressway and Transportnagar. An 18-metre road is already shown in the regional plan along the railway line near Akurdi. There would not be much of a problem for completion of the link, the civic authorities indicated.
Gajanan Babar told The Indian Express that he had submitted the proposal on the directions of the State Government that each State Assembly member should suggest works up to Rs five crore in their constituency. Babar, who has already made a demand for setting up a goods yard near Akurdi railway station, said that he had suggested two works one among them being the Expressway proposal, and other recommending widening of the Pune-Nashik highway up to four lanes in the Pimpri-Chinchwad limits. Each of theworks would cost Rs 2.5 crore, he said.
The proposal was readily accepted and the MSRDC has already started examining the technical feasibility aspects, Babar said. ``The link will definitely reduce the traffic flow on the present highway. More importantly, transport of goods will be faster between Pimpri-Chinchwad and Mumbai. Pimpri-Chinchwad being an industrial township, the road link will benefit thousands of transporters here as their business will also increase,''he said. The link, it is hoped, would also provide an easy access to the Expressway for traffic from Pimpri-Chinchwad.
