Bangalore, June 20: PSB skipper Parminder Singh, who is in the Indian camp preparing for the South African tour, proved his potential yet again. He scored the all-important goal in a Pool C encounter of the Tata 30th junior National hockey championship at the Akkithimmanahalli Stadium on Sunday.The verdict kept the bankmen from Jalandhar in contention for a quarter-final berth, and shut the door on Chandigarh who went into the do-or-die battle with one win and one defeat. PSB, with an all-win record, will cross swords with Orissa on Monday in the decider.
Parminder scored the winner 10 minutes into the game, deflecting in a Kanwalpreet free hit from just outside the D which left the Chandigarh goalkeeper Baljit Singh gasping. The goal invited protests from the Chandigarh players who claimed that the deflection was off Parminder's foot.However, umpire Gunashekar of Karnataka stood by his decision.
Bhopal pip HP: The Bhopal boys struggled to beat Himachal Pradesh 2-1 in Pool B. Goals from ShahidBag (11th) and Mohammed Sameer (45th) enabled them take the lead, which was reduced by Sanjeev Kumar of Himachal seven minutes later.
