DBYC pack Bandra boys off, squeeze into final

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
JUNE 20: Don Bosco Youth Centre A came back from the dead to advance to the final of the MDFA-conducted Air-India Trophy football tournament at the St Xavier's ground, Parel today.

DBYC A pipped Bandra Packers 8-7 via the tie-breaker after full-time scores were tied 1-1. Girish Desai's back pass in the dying moments of the game proved costly for Packers who were leading 1-0 till then. The back pass beat the goalkeeper Roy Dias and DBYC were back into the match which they, till then, were losing. Sadly for Packers, whose domination throughout the first-half and for most of the second was sealed by Philu Pendulkar's goal in the 42nd minute of the 70-minute match.

Pendulkar acted upon a cross from Aldrin Bird, a mean hockey player as well, and managed to toss it over an advancing goalkeeper S Sawant while sliding down. Packers held that advantage till the Desai mishap.

Desai's misfortunes continued in the tie-breaker as he missed the second shot for his team, driving straight at the goalkeeper. Bird wasanother culprit for Packers after Dias managed to save the opening shot from Benedict Dias (DBYC) to put Packers ahead.

Bird shot wide to put DBYC ahead and veteran Peter D'Silva, who had a brief stint as goalkeeper as well, coolly slotted home.

In the semi-final for the Guru Nanak Trophy, Borivli Rangers, helped by Valenky Rodrigues' 10th minute goal, beat St Paul's 1-0. They meet Cafe Royal in the final scheduled tentatively for Saturday.

The final for the Air-India Trophy is also scheduled for Saturday between Rhino Sports Club and DBYC A.
