JUNE 21: College principals have taken an unusual step this year towards deflecting pressure at the time of admissions: they have approached the police for protection.The Forum for Fairness in Education (FFE) led a delegation of nine principals last Friday to State Education Minister Sudhir Joshi, said FFE president Bhagvanji Raiyani. FFE had received a complaint from the principal of Tolani College of Commerce, Aspi Doctor, about pressure from corporators for giving admissions, following which the Forum decided to approach the government. The FFE has also met police commissioner R H Mendonca, said Raiyani. The deputy secretary of secondery education, J M Abhayankar and deputy director of education, greater Mumbai, D C Deshmukh were also present.
The principal of Lala Lajpatrai College, Haji Ali, M G Shirahatti, who was part of the meeting, told Express Newsline, ``Earlier, individual principals hade requested such protection. But this time, following the incident at Tolani college, there has beena concerted effort by all principals to ensure police protection''.
