AHMEDABAD, June 21: Jaundice claimed its first victim in the city on Sunday when 40-year-old Anil B Rathod, a resident of Gujarat Housing Board Colony, died in V S Hospital during treatment.According to officials, 52 fresh cases of jaundice have been reported from Khokhra area in the last two days, including 24 on Monday.
The total number of people affected by water contamination has gone up to 305. Also, four more cases of gastroenteritis were reported from Naroda area today.
Officials say besides cleaning and replacement of pipelines supplying water in the affected areas, chlorine content has been increased to one per cent from 0.5 per cent in drinking water being supplied to residents of Bhaipura-Khokhra area.
Health Department officials surveying the area have collected details of 52 cases reported to private doctors in the affected areas. Officials said on Saturday and Sunday, teams of health and engineering departments continued their surveys and collected water samples from the areas. Officials claim 161 samples were tested for bacterial infection.
Sources in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said the authorities were now concentrating on illegal water connections.
