National crop insurance scheme cleared by Government

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, JUNE 22: In a long-awaited, but significant, decision, the Union Government on Tuesday cleared the national crop insurance scheme by bringing all crops under it. It simultaneously decided to set up an agency, `Bharatiya Krishi Bima Nigam,' for the purpose.

Till the new agency came into existence, the scheme would be operated by the General Insurance Corporation.

The Union Cabinet, which met here this afternoon, also removed the insurance ceiling of Rs 10,000, thereby allowing insurance of crops for any amount, without fixing any upper limit, Minister of State for Agriculture Sompal told newsmen after the meeting.

Only a few crops are at present offered for insurance and there is an upper ceiling of Rs 10,000.
