Appointment of PGI Dean, other vital issues deferred

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, JUNE 22: The much awaited governing body meeting of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research ended in an anti-climax as major issues on agenda could not be decided conclusively.

On agenda was the decision regarding the post of PGI dean . Five names had been recommended on basis of seniority. These included Dr R.J. Dash, Dr R.N. Kataria, Dr Subash Kumari Gupta, Dr Banerjee, Dr S.K. Sharma. After deliberations, the decision was deferred because of shortage of time. A Dean will be chosen at the next governing body meeting.

Another important issue on agenda was the tabling of the report on Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes appointments. A five-member committee headed by the Union Health secretary looked into the matter. According to PGI Director Dr B.K. Sharma, "The report said that there should be reservations within one department but not among different departments."

Since difference of opinion emerged after the tabling of the report with both parties expressing dissatisfaction, it was decided by the governing body that the director will meet representatives of both parties and work towards a solution acceptable to both the parties.

Another outcome of the governing body meeting was the decision that the Union Health Minister will constitute a committee for selection of the next PGIMER director. The tenure of the present director ends in November.

After the governing body meeting the PGI's institute body met and confirmed various decisions taken by the governing body.
