NEW DELHI, JUNE 22: In a bid to step up attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on poll eve, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday reconstituted its media cell by appointing journalist Manohar Puri as its in-charge.The VHP would highlight Sonia's foreign antecedents and thus save the BJP from indulging in mud-slinging, a VHP leader said. Sants affiliated to the organisation would also launch a mass-contact programme, he said. VHP joint secretary Acharya Giriraj Kishore has claimed that his workers would not accept Sonia even if she converted to Hinduism. ``Can she change her ancestral country or her parentage?'' Kishore shot back in reply to a question at a press conference. The VHP has convened a two-day meeting of its Steering Committee at Hardwar from Wednesday. More than 80 sants are likely to participate in the meeting, which, among other things, would deliberate on the political scenario, Kargil conflict, Sonia's antecedents and VHP's role in the general election, Kishore said.
The steeringcommittee meeting would be followed up by a three-day All India Workers Meeting at Rishikesh near Hardwar from June 26. ``Workers would be educated about context and background of Kargil conflict so that they can launch a awareness campaign,'' Kishore said, indicating that the political benefit from such a campaign would obviously be reaped by its political ally, the BJP.
The VHP, in letters written to the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister, has promised to perform whatever function its cadre is asked to perform. The VHP also urged the Government to teach Pakistan a lesson to avoid recurrence of incidents like Kargil. ``It is not a war-like situation in Kargil, but there is already a war which should be taken to its logical conclusion.
