Eid celebrations amid security

SURAT, June 27: Tight bandobast, which included about 5000 security personnel, marked Eid-e-Milad which was celebrated in the city on Sunday. Until late in the evening, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city even as processions continued into the night.

Thousands of devotees assembled at Zampa Bazaar from where they took out a huge procession that passed through the main thoroughfare, Bhagatalao, Chowk and concluded at the famous Khwaja Dana Masjid at Bade Khan Chakla. A similar procession was also taken out at Madina Masjid Limbayat, which returned to the masjid after passing through important routes in the area.

Taking no chances, the city police deployed 2000 additional forces that included State Reserve Police (SRP) and Home Guards in addition to the 3300 strong city police force which was put on alert. Sixty-five vehicles containing wireless sets, vehicles of all top police officials as well as `Vajra' the riot control vehicle were patrolling the city before and during the processions.

Eid-e-Milad is observed to mark the birth anniversary of prophet Mohammed by devotees, who celebrate the occasion by taking out processions and reciting sacred verses from the Koran. The city control room stated on Sunday night that the procession reached Bade Khan Chakla masjid without any untoward incident.
