MUMBAI, JUNE 29: Public sector major National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is planning to raise its capacity to 40,000 mw by 2012, NTPC chairman and managing director (CMD) Rajendra Singh said here today. To finance new projects, NTPC plans to raise Rs 1,100 crore which includes Rs 600 crore from the domestic market and Rs 500 crore from international market. The corporation has already chalked out a Rs 60,000 crore plan to increase the installed capacity from the present 17,737 mw. Of this, during the current fiscal, NTPC is targeting to add 1115 mw of fresh capacity while by 2007, the capacity will go up to 30,000 mw. The navratna had achieved a capacity addition of 940 mw against the targeted 115 mw in the previous fiscal.
The capacity addition last year was through the projects Vindhyachal II (500 mw), Kayamkulam (230 mw) and Unchahar II (210 mw). The total installed capacity of the corporation now stands at 17,735 mw, 19 per cent of the country's total power generation capacity.
Singh said NTPCwas in talks with the government to work out a mode of securitisation by which the Rs 11,427 crore arrears of state electricity boards could be transformed into tradeable securities. ``If the SEB dues can be securitised, a big part of our problem would be solved,'' he said.
Singh said that NTPC is pursuing a 1000 mw gas-based thermal power project in Bangladesh, for which the navaratna company has recently been asked by Dhaka to furnish a detailed blueprint. The corporation also plans to raise Rs 1000 crore from the international market by the end of the fiscal 2000.
``We are aggressively pursuing the Bangladesh project, because that country has the advantage of having abundant and cheap gas. Though we shown our interest in the project long back, it took the Bangladesh government eight months to respond to the proposal,'' he said.
