Punjab University fails to announce results; July 1 last date

Jatin Gandhi
Chandigarh, June 29: Even as the last date for submission of admission forms for various postgraduate courses offered by the Punjab University is less than two days away, the university is far from declaring the results of the final year undergraduate classes and most entrance tests.

While the university has fixed July 1 as the last date for filling the forms for the PG courses (which includes MA in as many as 20 departments) on the campus, Panjab University Controller of Examinations Dr Sodhi Ram confirmed that the university will not be able to declare the results of the final year undergraduate classes by then. "Though the results are scheduled to be declared in August, we are trying our best for the month of July," he told Newsline.

While the university today declared the results of the LLB and LLM courses, the results of entrance tests to M.Com, MCA, M.Lib, MA (Education), M.Ed and MMC are still awaited. Most students applying for admission to various postgraduate courses have done so without filling in the final year results which are still awaited. Uncertain about their performance in the entrance tests or the lower examination (BA, B.Sc and B.Com), several students are filling up the forms for admission simultaneously for several departments.

A section of students sees the delay as a clever move by the university to make money by forcing all admission aspirants to fill the forms. Says Gagandeep Singh Virk, an LLB aspirant: "There are about 300 seats in law for which over 3,000 persons took the test. By the time they declare the result tomorrow, most people would have filled the forms irrespective of whether they did well or not."

Says a senior professor in one of the university teaching departments: "When the authorities knew that they had scheduled the results of BA/B.Sc Part III for August, why did they fix the date for filling forms for July 1? This is nothing short of exploiting the situation."

Students unions, too, are peeved at the university authorities fixing "unrealistic" dates for submitting the forms. Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) president Lakhjeet Singh the union will begin an agitation if the date is not postponed by a fortnight at least.

On the other hand, says Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) city president Neeraj Sharma, while demanding that the date for submission be extended: "They are repeating last year's mistake. Now even if they do extend the dates, whether tomorrow or on July 1 there are so many students who would have submitted their forms to avoid the last date rush. They have had to fill the forms not knowing how they have fared in the exams and wasted money on buying and filling forms."
