Chandigarh, June 29: The city police have registered a case against a Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) for allegedly possessing a stolen car with a fake registration number.Police sources said that ASI Sarabjit Singh and his wife Sukhjinder Kaur have been booked for cheating, forgery, dishonestly receiving property with the knowledge of it being stolen and criminal conspiracy. No arrests have been made so far.Sarabjit Singh is these days posted with the Roopnagar police lines; he was earlier SHO at Mullanpur police station near here.
Sources added that on a tip-off the police raided the ASI's premises in Sector 40 where he resided in a rented house. A white Maruti car bearing registration number PB-10-2427 was recovered from his possession. The suspicion grew as the ASI could not produce documents certifying its ownership.
On verification, the police found that the car was stolen from Delhi and its actual registration number was DL-2C-B-4755. A case was registered with the Rajouri Garden police station in New Delhi last year.
The police have also seized a Bajaj scooter, registration numer PB-04-A-3460, which the ASI claims as his own.
