SURAT, June 29: In a surprise raid on a city hotel on early Tuesday morning the Detection of Crime Branch and the Salabatpura police arrested 26 people attending a liquor party. Interestingly, the hotel-owner, who was also among the ones arrested, was about 10 years ago an assistant sub-inspector in the city police force.According to information, the police team on the basis of a tip-off raided Hotel Sahakar, near Man Darwaja area of the city at 1.45 am on Tuesday and arrested the accused in midst of the party. The arrested included the hotel-owner, Tukaram Namdev Chavan, the party-organiser and businessman Moolchand Lekhrajmal Bhagchandani.
Twenty four others arrested included traders from the city, Chavan's two sons, a businessman from Mount Abu and three waiters of the hotel. The police also seized four bottles of whisky worth Rs 2000, three half-empty bottles of the same whisky and 22 glasses.
According to the police, while 10 of those arrested were heavily drunk, all were booked under sections 61(1)b, 65(a)e, 68, 83 and 86 of the Prohibition Act. The police team was led by DCB PI M G Kaneriya, Salabatpura PI N N Patel and DCB PSI V B Patel.
