Statues looted from temple

SURAT, June 29: In yet another case of a temple loot, thieves broke into a Jain dehrasar during the early hours of Tuesday and decamped with gold and silver idols worth Rs 25,000. The loot took place at the Old Adeshwar Dehrasar located at Khatpitia Chakla on the Chauta Bazaar main road. Temple loots have been on the rise of late.

The thieves reportedly broke at least five of the Dehrasar's locks before decamping with half-a-dozen statues of gods kept in its innermost room. The incident took place between midnight and 5:30 am today morning, when the burglary was noticed by mahant Suresh Tashwala. Tashwala told the police that a couple of gold statues, three silver statues and other statues of precious metals had been stolen.
