Pay-and-use toilets on BOO basis

PUNE, JUNE 29: Municipal Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad has decided to experiment pay-and-use public toilets in private sector on BOO (Build-Operate & Own) principle. The public toilets will be mainly constructed in slums.

Gaikwad today told mediapersons that he was presently working out the proposal, which he will send to the Standing Committee in the next week. He said experiment of pay-and-use public toilets undertaken by the private parties had proved successful in Mumbai and would implement the same in Pune. Gaikwad said he had discussed the proposal with the party leaders and they haqd accepted it in principle.

According to the proposal, the municipal corporation would sanction a loan upto to Rs. five lakh to the interested parties, which would be recovered in 36 instalments.

He however said that the corporation would also allot a land to the parties on 30 years lease.

Gaikwad has proposed to charge Rs. 10 as monthly fee from the family, living in the slum or Rs. one from the person, not living in the slum for every use. He further added the private parties would have to take care of maintenance of the public toilets for 30 years.

The Municipal commissioner said the corporation would start indentifying the sites of public toilets, once the proposal was approved by the committee. He said 12 sites in 12 ward offices would be selected in the first phaze as an experiment while other sites would identified later.He said he had initiated the process of acquisition 100 acres of land at Undri-Pisoli for garbage depot where Kothrud depot would be shifted by sending a letter to District Collector.

He said he was expecting to get the required land within three months.Answering a question on Standing Committee's number of recommendations on allotting stalls, Municipal Commissioner Gaikwad said administration had not approved a single proposal.
