MUMBAI, JUNE 29: Ajit Wadekar, the National cricket team selection committee's chairman, believes ``the hype and hoopla'' surrounding the side in the pre-championship build-up proved counterproductive in their quest to regain the World Cup.Wadekar believes the commercial assault as the ``biggest cause of the downfall'' of a team which is known to be ``unpredictable and inconsistent.''
He felt that all the adulation, speeches and felicitations made the players feel invincible and ``next only to God''.
``It got them carried away and become overconfident,'' he added in a candid speech after picking the winners of The Zandu Balm Golden Masters Contest on Monday night.
The former Indian skipper, who has seen most of the Indian players at close quarters during his term first as coach and now as selection committee chairman, said that there are inherent ``flaws in the Indian team'' which saw them fail to make the World Cup semi-finals. He said the (top half) batting was good but the bottom half wasvirtually non-existent. ``If each of them had scored 10 or 20 runs, it would have made all the difference in the end analysis.'' He said the fielding was inconsisent and the bowling well below potential and a ``big let down''.
The contest received an overwhelming response of 1,62,322 entries, of which 172 were all correct. Wadekar picked 10 lucky winners from a bowl, each of whom would receive a World Cup cricket commemorative gold medallion featuring Sachin Tendulkar's face on one side of the coin.
