Gujarat doctors ready to wield guns for country

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
AHMEDABAD, JUNE 30: After ex-servicemen, youngsters just past their teens, it is now the turn of doctors to offer their services to the Kargil cause. The intrusions by so-called freedom fighters has made even the most cynical of people sit up and do more than merely take note of the goings on. As many as 500 doctors have volunteered to go to Kashmir to throw the intruders of Indian territory.

While Kargil is the favoured destination of the doctors, they have offered to go to any part of the country where their services may be required, Dr Pranav Bhavsar of the BJP's doctors cell said here today.

He said that the doctors who are even prepared to pick up arms in the defence of the country, can be very helpful to the defence authorities if engaged to provide medical aid to the injured soldiers.

At a convention held here on Sunday by the BJP's doctors cell, which was addressed by the Union Home Minister L K Advani and attended by thousands of doctors from all over Gujarat, besides donating blood for theinjured soldiers, about 500 doctors came forward to work as volunteers in the forward areas.

Gujarat Chief Minister, Keshubhai Patel, said that the request of the doctors would be forwarded to the central government for proper action.

``Until now people have only seen doctors transfusing blood from a donor to a patient. Not many have seen a doctor giving blood. But here at their (doctors) convention, they have not only donated blood, but also volunteered to go to the battlefield to avenge the betrayal by the Pakistanis,'' said Bharat Pandya, State BJP spokesman.
