SURAT, June 30: Noted industrialist Girishchandra Rameshchandra Luthra, owner of Luthra Dyeing, was arrested by the Umra police on Wednesday afternoon under charges of attempt to murder, after he allegedly ran over a Detection of Crime Branch policeman in the early hours of Wednesday.Police Sub-Inspector R L Mawani, who sustained two fractures in his leg and was subsequently admitted to the Mission Hospital in the Athwalines area, where he is now recuperating, was on night duty on the Surat-Dumas Road when the incident occurred.
Talking to Express Newsline, the DCB and the Umra police said that Mawani and two other policemen were patrolling the streets near Gaviyar Bus Stand when they tried to stop a red Tata Safari car (GJ 5 PP 6665). Luthra was reportedly driving the car; he was accompanied by an as-yet unidentified woman.
In his statement, Mawani alleged that Luthra refused to stop the vehicle, and, instead, ran over him and sped away. The policemen accompanying him, however, managed to note down the vehicle's registration number, which led the police to Luthra.
While Luthra was taken into custody by a team of the Umra police led by Police Inspector G K Chaudhary, a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against him.
