SURAT, June 30: Jains from all over the city took out a rally on Wednesday and handed a memorandum to the police commissioner, expressing grave concern over the increase in temple burglaries in the city in the recent past.As many as 30 statuettes - some as old as 900 years - were stolen by burglars from the Old Adeshwar dehrasar (Dadiya Dehrasar) during the early hours of Tuesday. A delegation who met the commissioner, said that they were deeply anguished by the loss of both historical and religious items and informed the commissioner that the theft was an indicator of a deterioration in the city law and order situation.
Led by Suresh Babu Tashwala, the dehrasar priest, the delegation told the police authorities that the police ought to take steps to stop such incidences as the religious sentiments of the Jain community had been hurt because of the burglary. Copies of the memorandum have been sent to the chief minister, home minister, law minister and top police officials of the state, among others. The delegation also submitted to the commissioner, a detailed list of all the statuettes stolen, including the century in which they were created, their sizes and other details.
