Municipal Corporation pays tributes to martyrs

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, June 30: At its meeting held here today, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation paid tributes to those who died fighting Pakistan infiltrators in Kargil. A proposal was also mooted to construct a war memorial in their memory.

The meeting was adjourned to July 2 without conducting any business. As soon as the 29-member House of the corporation assembled in the morning, it observed two minutes silence in memory of the martyrs.

Before the House could discuss items on the agenda, BJP councillor Ranjana Shahi moved a eight-line resolution saying: "The countrymen are indebted to our brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the Motherland. We are pained and agitated at the barbaric murder of six soldiers by Pakistan. We are proud of our forces and stand firmly behind them." The House passed the resolution with certain amendments.Through another resolution, ruling party leader R.L. Arora, on behalf of R.S. Bedi, who was not present in the meeting, proposed to the House that a war memorial be erected as a permanent feature to remind future generations.

The resolution, seconded by ex-mayor Kamla Sharma, was passed unanimously after discussion. The architectural design and place will be decided in consultation with the UT Administration, the House was informed.

While a nominated councillor Saudambini Bambah sought job reservation to the dependents of war victims in the Corporation, SJP councillor Satinder Dhawan favoured the constitution of separate fund for soldiers. Ruling party member O.P. Goel advised councillors to visit their wards to create awareness and organise blood donation camps for the injured.

On the basis of experience of two wars in 1965 and 1971, Major General (retd) Rajinder Nath, another nominated councillor, told the House: "It is a unique war, which has not been fought so far. Soldiers in Kargil have to face the enemy while climbing mountaintops."

Keeping aside their political affiliations, councillors announced that they would donate their constituency allowance for the current month for the welfare of soldiers. Assistant Commissioner R.K. Rao informed the House that Corporation employees will contribute their one day's salary and a blood donation camp will be held shortly.

After the tea break, the House was adjourned to July 2 when discussion on the agenda items will take place.
