Bandh call The Federation of Trade Associations of Pune has declared a State-wide strike on July 1, to protest against the increase in sales tax imposed by the State Government. Popatlal Ostwal, president of the Federation, said in a recent press release, that the Chief Minister had not formed any committee to look into their demands, as he had assured. He also criticised the increase in professional tax, telephone and electricity rates, and asked for withdrawal of the octroi imposed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).The Poona Timber Merchants and Sawmill Owners' Association have declared their support. Meanwhile, all the petrol pumps in the city will remain open tomorrow. President of city Petrol Dealers' Association Chotu Madhani said the strike was called for at a short notice. HAL duped The Hindustan Antibiotics Ltd (HAL) was allegedly duped to the tune of Rs 49,43, 671 during October 1998 to December 1998. According to a complaint filed by Pramodkumar Barpanda, circle manager, the company was cheated by one of their dealers who had promised them sales amounting to the above amount. According to the FIR lodged by Barpanda, Shantilal Jogetia, resident of Jaipur, had promised to sell goods for the company. His clearing and sale company, Nitin Pharma, had been awarded the contract for the sale of medicines. The accused allegedly sold the consignment and did not pay the proceeds of the sale to HAL.
