Soldier may have cooked up tales of valour

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
MYSORE, JULY 1: Army officials will enquire into the claims of 23-year-old Akram Mohamed that he was injured in the Kargil conflict and had been sent to his home town of Mysore on leave.

Akram received wide local and national media coverage for his `heroism' and was being honoured by a number of organisations.

However, ex-army officers like Major N M Poovai and Major Gen (Retd) Karumbaiah began to suspect the credentials of Akram as they felt that there were a lot of inconsistencies in his statements.

Detailed enquiries by Maj Gen (Retd) Karumbaiah revealed that Akram was a sepoy working as a cook in the army canteen of Engineering Regiment, Ranchi, and he was injured due to an accidental while cooking.

Others who wanted to felicitate Akram have cancelled the programmes.
